Oh man, when I worked at Barns & Noble we had two 16 year olds on the payroll, and I mean, they were pretty capable of handling themselves, they both worked two jobs and shared an apartment between them and were managing fine on their own, but the fact remains that they were 16.

So one day this absolute Karen comes in while we were shortstaffed and got in line to check out, and there were like five people in it IDK. One of these 16 year olds was working cashier and this adult woman gets up to her and starts shrieking and cussing at her because she had to wait like two minutes to check out, and why didn’t she call for help (she had, multiple times), and she wanted to speak to the manager, and quite frankly she was very lucky that the manager was busy and I happened to walk up to checkout at that particular moment, because Cheryl would have broken both her legs and made her walk out the door.

I was not a manager, but when I walked up with a murderous smile and asked what the problem seemed to be she went ahead and assumed, and I didn’t feel the need to correct her. I sent the kid off on some bogus errand to go get another pack of the monthly feature out of the stockroom and then smiled and nodded sympathetically as this woman vented at me about how respectable stores didn’t make their customers wait and see if she’d shop here again.

The thing about people like that is… they’re pretty easy to case. I knew she would be super busy ranting and I knew she was in a “hurry” so she wouldn’t pay too much attention as she swiped her card, and I knew for sure she wouldn’t want to waste her time with a receipt, and I was right on all counts.

Sometimes people just come into Barnes & Noble and buy ten hardcover copies of Fear by Bob Woodard. It’s none of my business. Inventory’s an inexact art.
